Peri-implant soft tissues in the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases

Peri-implant diseases have been shown to have a high prevalence, compromising the long-term success and survival of dental implants and negatively affecting patients’ perception of treatment outcomes. Peri-implant soft tissues represent the first line of defense against bacterial contamination, aiming to seal the peri-implant bone and prevent bacterial colonization.

The amount of keratinized mucosa and the thickness of the peri-implant soft tissues are key parameters commonly assessed by clinicians. However, the quality of this biological seal is often overlooked, it is of importance to also consider the role of connective tissue adhesion and the junctional epithelium in maintaining peri-implant health. This presentation will focus on clinical strategies to prevent the onset of peri-implant disease by optimizing peri-implant soft tissue conditions. Additionally, it will address the management of clinical situations in which disease has already occurred and soft tissue deficiencies have been contributing factors.
